Growing Capacity Gap: Why Are Some Stations Growing?

May 31, 2013
Presented at PMBA Annual Conference Session

Washington, D.C.

For the second year, we reported on Forum research to the annual conference of Public Media Business Association, a group that supports financial and human resource managers within public media.  The Forum at the May 30 PMBA conference

  • Extended the research we presented in 2012 at the PMBA conference examining the importance of “philanthropic revenue” (vs. listener/viewer sensitive revenue);
  • Included findings we developed during the fall and included in November Forum presented to the Super Regional Station meeting in New Orleans.

In this session we reviewed trend to “go local” within public radio stations, the “virtuous cycle” of revenue growth and service expansion that has emerged within some of the leading public broadcasting stations and the use of major gifts as a way to capitalize the expansion of local news and digital media efforts.
